This cooperative picture-matching game is designed to facilitate the building of roads, railroads, and waterways. The 2-inch square tiles feature illustrations of the aforementioned elements, as well as some railroad stations and harbors. Each player is dealt 10 tiles and tasked with matching river to river, road to road, and rail to rail. The first player to use up all their tiles emerges victorious. However, this non-reading game is primarily about cooperation. The myriad of different paths and combinations create a unique experience, ensuring that no two gameplay sessions are alike. --Lynne Sampson
Let's Play River's Roads and Rails! The game comprises 140 picture tiles depicting segments of rivers, roads, and rails. Players begin by placing all the picture tiles face down in the box or on the playing surface. Each player then draws two picture tiles and positions them face-up in front of them. The players take turns adding their picture tiles to an ever-expanding network of rivers, roads, and rails. However, there is a catch: some tiles may feature only rivers, while others may solely contain roads and rails, making it impossible to always achieve a perfect match. If a player is unable to make a match, they must draw another picture tile from the box and wait for their next turn. Once the picture tiles in the box have been exhausted, the first player to discard all of their tiles wins the game.
What Do You Learn? Observation skills: Players must carefully examine the tiles to identify compatible connections. Matching: The core gameplay revolves around finding and connecting complementary tile elements. Recognition: Players must recognize the various transportation infrastructure depicted on the tiles. Association: The game encourages players to mentally visualize and link the different transportation networks.
Each tile has two sides, and each side can contain at most one road, one river, and one rail. Only two of the tiles feature branching elements. The game can be played competitively, similar to Dominoes, or cooperatively, like a free-form jigsaw puzzle. River's Roads and Rails is an excellent indoor activity that promotes spatial awareness, problem-solving, and collaborative skills.
